Wonderful, wooden daguerreotype frame and oversized mat, 3 ¾” x 4,” that holds an 1840’s quarter-plate daguerreotype of a couple.  This is a 10” x 10 ½” frame with a lovely reddish brown stain that plays perfectly with the gold-gilded, wooden inset border and the hue of the brass mat. The frame is in very good condition with some small marks and nicks as seen. The bottom two corners have small losses of the veneer on the outside edges. The image shows a reserved husband and wife with the wife holding a book.  The image has nice detail, as we see the wrinkles in the man’s face and his aged hands from laboring over the years.  It appears to have been cleaned in the past and has marks and scratches as seen in the scan.  We’ve sold quite a few of these oversized quarter-plates over the years and many with half of a case or a badly damaged one. This would make a fabulous presentation if you have a special daguerreotype in that size without a good case.  As it is, it is a nice presentation piece to hang on the wall.
